(U) Luri language

This section describes the language of the Lur.

(U) Bakhtiari, also known as Luri, is a spoken, not written, language. The few literate Lurs and Bakhtiaris write Persian.

(U) The word Bakhtiari is made up of two Farsi words, bakht (chance, luck) and iari (companion, friend), to create bakhtiari (lucky companion). Some Bakhtiari believe that their name was originally the last name of a powerful khan whose followers and their families assumed his name out of respect and admiration.
