The database includes contributions to state and, when applicable, federal accounts. The 100 major state central party committees operate two accounts: one regulated in their state and one regulated by the Federal Election Commission. Federal accounts hold the coveted "hard money," which parties can spend to directly benefit federal candidates. See methodology.
